About the story……..Warning! Spoilers!…….

This is a three part short story series about Luc Hellbourne by author Amber Kell and epublished by Literary Road. In the first part Luc is dumped by his werewolf mate, Bran, of twenty years for a female. Bran had a sudden desire for pups so he decides to take a female as mate. Luc leaves and ends up in a bar trying to drown his hurt and meets vampire master, Nikkolai, who falls for Luc and claims him as mate. They have hot, steamy sex which Amber Kell never disappoints on. But Luc finds another master vampire abusing a young vampire in one of the private rooms and blames Nikkolai because he didn’t interfere during the punishment. Of course Nikkolai wasn’t present while it was happening and their culture in very different than the wolves but that doesn’t make much of a difference to him. Luc leaves with the abused vampire and that ends the first part.

The next story opens with Luc living with the rescued vampire who looks on him as master now and Nikkolai trying to make amends with Luc. His werewolf mate also wants him back and Luc welcomes Bran back without too much trouble. This sets off a series of events in Luc’s life all leading to his birthday which you come to find out he spends being tortured by his brothers from Hell…..literally. Luc’s father turns out to be Lucifer himself and he wants Luc to stay in Hell with him. So on each of his birthday’s Lucifer tries convincing him by having him beaten, mutilated…..anything that comes to mind of his half brothers.

The final part takes place on his birthday and the trials Luc goes through to get back to the man he loves, Bran. I enjoyed the first part of this series and looked forward for the second like a lot of Amber Kell fans but I was disappointed with the ending. I liked Nikkolai at first and and I never could make up my mind about Bran, I just didn’t have enough to go on. Then to find out they are both soulmates to Luc but he wasn’t meant to meet Nikkolai until after Bran dies just ruined the whole thing for me. Beyond the sexual chemistry, Luc never gave Nikkolai a real chance. His love and thoughts were all for Bran and it seemed Nikkolai was just a rebound lover for Luc and he had no real feelings for the vampire. And then at the end of the story Nikkolai basically throws up his hands in defeat and says Bran can have Luc. It wasn’t something I expected the dominant master vampire we were introduced to do if Luc was his mate.

It started out great for me but again I felt rushed and the characters I could have loved got lost somewhere. I enjoyed Luc in the beginning but by the end I wasn’t sure if I even liked him or understood him. I felt the stories being so short hurt the plot and characters which usually doesn’t happen with Amber Kell. She usually delivers an incredible story with few words but this time I’m not so sure. I am not even sure what I wanted to see happen at the end because the characters changed so much I was never completely sure who they really were to begin with.

I would not judge Amber Kell on just this story alone. It wasn’t for me but I would recommend reading some of Amber Kell’s other work. Her moon pack series is excellent and you can connect better with the characters and understand them and most importantly I love her heroes. I am currently reading her Dragonmen series and hope it is just as enjoyable. I will keep watching her releases and hope that she starts doing some full length ebooks because she really is a wonderful writer and I know I would enjoy them more.

Part of the Dreamspinner Press ‘To Have and To Hold’ romance series (available in ebook)

……………………………………………………..Warning! Spoilers!
The Finest Thing by Lily Sawyer is a short story from Dreamspinner Press ‘To Have And To Hold’ series, a collection of love stories for the month of June, the month of weddings and commitments. In ‘The Finest Thing’ you meet Aiden Mason. He lives in San Diego and travels a lot for his job at a pharmaceutical company. Coming home from a trip he receives a wedding invitation from friends Peter and Elliot back home in Connecticut. He is not sure he wants to go because his family rejected him when he told them he was gay and there are to many memories of the lover he lost to cancer two years before but he was good friends with the two men getting married so he decides to go.
After receiving the wedding invitation you find out a lot about Aiden. You learn how much he loved Kyle, the past lover he lost to cancer and how his family rejected him. He seems to be a lonely guy but things start to change for him when he goes back to Connecticut for the wedding. Though his father still hates him he works everything out with his mother and brother and he meets Paul, a cousin to one of the grooms, at the wedding and they fall in love.
The story was written well and kept me interested but it felt rushed. I didn’t feel that spark between the characters, that indefinable something that brings them to life but I think that was due more to the length of the story than anything else. In the beginning of the story he was still so focused on Kyle and what they had together so it was hard to believe his rushed relationship with Paul. It also didn’t help that I couldn’t get a good picture of the characters in my head or a feel for their personalities. I just couldn’t connect with Aiden and Paul. It is always a challenge to write a short story especially when one of your characters has a lot of past baggage they need to work through. I like to get to know the characters I read about so I care how they end up at the end of the story. I think Lily Sawyer can deliver this in a longer story so I will watch for future titles.
Dreamspinner’s ‘To Have and To Hold’ shorts has some great stories so check them out!

Phoenix Review…….Fighting For Eternity by Shayla Kersten

About the story……..

Searching for a murderous rogue vampire, Watcher Estefan Garza’s life is turned upside down by tragic loss and a surprise from his past. His bone chilling loss is warmed by fires of passion reignited by vampire Karl Brandt.

On a quest to destroy a former friend, Karl is startled by Estefan and his mysterious companions. Karl can’t understand why Estefan hasn’t aged in seventy years. Unwilling to let him leave until Karl discovers the truth, he offers Estefan and his friends refuge and assistance for their common mission.

As a bloody battle for Memphis ensues, Karl and Estefan bond between danger and destruction until all that remains separating them is a fight for eternity.

…………………………………………Warning! Spoilers!

SHAYLA KERSTEN surprised me this time with her new ebook that came out yesterday from publisher Ellora’s Cave. I have read her entire Eternity series and love her take on vampires. She put her own unique spin on immortals and she reels me in every time.

I was excited to learn Estefan would have his own story, as I was left wanting after reading The Rememdiu and couldn’t help feeling that the characters didn’t fit together right. I fell in love with Roger, Cardin and the quiet Estefan but Adria left me a little cold. I liked her spirit but when I was done with the story I didn’t feel like she fit with the others and there was a spark missing. I was hoping she would maybe get her own story but also felt she would never be truly happy giving up what she felt to be her only purpose in life, hating and killing vampires. I was surprised how Shayla began Fighting For Eternity by a fight scene in which took Adria’s life but it felt like it was meant to be. I don’t think she could have changed after so many years of fighting.

After Adria’s death the story revolved around Estefan and a vampire from his past, Karl. I had hoped to learn their story after reading The Rememdiu and loved that they were brought together again despite what should have kept them apart. They form a bond that turns into love and eventually trust. I think Roger needs to loosen up a little on Karl and give him a chance and trust in Estefan. He may be quiet but I see a strength in Estefan that hopefully will assert itself more.

I also hope that she continues Roger and Cardin’s story. I didn’t feel like their story was finished maybe they could use a nice little male vampire of their own to take care of? Protecting a vampire of their own could give them a better understanding of their family and friends….I can wish, can’t I?

I would recommend not only this series but all Shayla Kersten’s work. Her characters are brought to life and she keeps your mind completely planted in the story until the end. I can’t think of a better way of spending a couple hours than reading about her hot heroes. Did I mention how hot the sex was? It’s a must read!
